Bread of Life

Jesus called himself the bread of life. He said that if any man would eat of this bread he shall live forever. That means that those who have received Christ would never die! Jesus said in John 6:35 "I am the bread of life: he that comes to me will never hunger; and he that believes on me shall never thirst." Like the children of Israel who wandered for 40 years in the wilderness God provides for his people. The children of Israel ate manna, which God supplied. Every morning the people would gather this manna bread and put it in the Ark of the Covenant. The bread stored here remained fresh. The bread left out got stale and rotted. This is an example to the believer to stay close to Christ who is our Ark of the Covenant. Jesus went on to say that his flesh was the meat (bread and his blood was the drink he spoke of. It was forbidden by the law to drink blood so what could he have meant? St John 1:14 "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among the people." The Word of God is Jesus Christ. This bread, meat or flesh he speaks of is his Word. Eat of the bible the written Word of God! St Matthew 26:26 "And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the New Testament which is shed for the remission of sins." Read it, study it, and meditate upon it. Meat or bread alone can get dry and without something to wash it down with we can choke on it. We need living water! This water is the blood of Christ Jesus. How do we drink his blood? The blood is the life of man. The Holy Spirit gives us that eternal life. So the blood being spoke of hear is the Holy Spirit. He is the one who teaches and guides us about Jesus. The Holy Spirit does not speak of himself but of the Lord who sent him for us. Reading the bible alone can give us moral support and is a good standard to live by. To truly understand it we must become spiritualized. God is a spirit. We must worship him in spirit and in truth. In spirit by consuming him and drinking of him, in truth by recognizing whom he is.

To understand God and how to worship him and receive from him his blessings a person must become spiritual. Psalms 91:1 "He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." To be close enough to be in the shadow of God is as about as close as it gets. Where is this place? It is up high not down here low in the valley. We must reach high to the top of the highest peak. Psalms 103:5 Who satisfies thy mouth with good things: so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles." This speaks of our youth being renewed like the eagles. How is it renewed? God satisfies our mouths. He feeds us. What does he feed us? His Word! Where do the eagles nest? They prefer the highest mountain in the tallest tree! This is spiritual! Isaiah 40:31 "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings of eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint." In Deuteronomy chapter 32 the bible speaks of the eagle stirring up the nest. Sometimes we must stir up that spirit that God has blessed us with.

I continue to hear people say that they read their bible and live a good life. This is fantastic! However there is more to God than just reading his Word. To activate his Word one must drink the blood. The blood is that which gives life. Without the Spirit of our Lord reading the bible alone will not save you. It is by the shedding of blood that we receive remission for our sins.

It is important to understand that whatever we feed our hearts will eventually come out. If you pour a glass full of water until it spills over then the flood dampens everything around it. That is the way our spirit is. If we feed it godly things it will produce godly things and those around us can be effected by it.

Jeremiah 1:9 "Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold I have put my words in thy mouth." If we allow God to feed us his Word by touching his hand to our lips we will desire to spill over to others. The fear that we might carry, and the unworthiness that we feel shall disappear as God's Word gives us confidence. God then can use us for his work.

In Ezekiel chapter 3 God had a word he wanted to send to the House of Israel. He literally told the prophet to eat a scroll. Verse 3 "And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then I did eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness." God's Word is never bitter. It fills the whole being when eaten. At this point the prophet being filled with God's Word to the House of Israel was ready to go and speak. Another amazing fact is that he did not speak anything foreign to them. His language was not hard nor strange but it made complete sense to them in all understanding. When God speaks to his people through man he speaks plainly.

The only way God is able to use a person is if that person is wanting to be used. The only way God can feed a person is if that person wants to eat. The prophet Isaiah made it clear in Isaiah chapter 6 verse 7-8 that he desired to be used by God. "And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, here am I; send me."

If we want to be used by God we must eat of his flesh and drink of his blood and make ourselves a willing vessel for his use.

The main theme of this message is to encourage everyone to seek the Lord while he may be found. If we hunger and thirst after righteousness the God promises us that we shall be filled.
